GEMBA Walk (Observe – Engage – Improve)

Gemba is a Japanese term that means “the actual place” and it is the place where value is created in a process. A Gemba Walk is an activity whereby the observer is required to observe the actual processes, or activities to gain valuable insights on how to eliminate or reduce non-value activities, and thereupon propose improvements that are to be made. Thoughtful observation provides unique value to bring forth continuous improvement at workplace.

Observation is a vital skill required for a person to develop his perception, and that perception must be in align with the reality on the shop-floor. The perception must be supported by what one hears, sees, feels, and thinks which would ultimate help one to make the right decision in solving problems or seeking improvements. Unfortunately, those who are not trained would normally depend on second hand information to make their decisions.

Being an interactive and a hands-on session this program would provide the necessary senses utilization and critical thinking skills for an effective Kaizen implementation.

Course Objectives

After the course, participants will be able to:

  • comprehend the foundational definition and purpose of Gemba Walks, including their significance in Lean management and process improvement.
  • examine the origins of Gemba Walks within Lean management and it’s purpose.
  • apply the essential principles of Gemba Walks, such as direct observation, respect for people, and continuous improvement, to effectively engage in process analysis.
  • develop skills to set clear objectives, align them with organizational goals, and prepare for a successful Gemba Walk, including choosing the appropriate time and location.
  • practice techniques for engaging with employees, questioning and listening effectively, and using observation skills to identify workflow issues, bottlenecks, and safety concerns.
  • master methods for collecting and documenting data during Gemba Walks, and use tools like 5 Whys and Fishbone Diagrams to analyze patterns, identify root causes, and address issues.
  • develop and prioritize action plans based on observations, communicate findings effectively to stakeholders, and implement strategies for tracking progress and achieving continuous improvement.
  • introducing and fostering a culture of continuous improvement through regular Gemba Walks, involving all organizational levels, and measuring the impact of these initiatives on overall performance.
